Cuba is all over the news at the moment, and for good reason.
After 50-plus years of communist rule under Fidel Castro, Americans were largely banned from visiting the island just 90 miles from our shores. The recent reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba is set to open the floodgates of American tourists into the country, potentially changing the nation as we know it.
Comedian/writer Steve Benaquist, along with his girlfriend, managed to beat the oncoming tourist wave by traveling through Cuba last September for two weeks.
Traveling largely by local bus from Havana to outlying country towns and pristine beaches, Steve stayed exclusively in casa particulares – private homes.
