The continent of Asia encompasses many varied nations, and it seems like Katei Chang’s family comes from half of them.
Katei is of Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean descent, but grew up in Brisbane, Australia. His diverse background, linguistic skills, and prodigious musical talent have allowed him to become one of the most in-demand cruise performers both in the US and Asia.
A rock violinist, Katei spent years living and recording in Tokyo, but returned to Australia after the devastating 2011 Tohuku earthquake. A few years later, he was discovered by a talent agent while busking daily on the streets of Melbourne, and soon a new career on the high seas was born.
Katei shares Tales of being the only Asian student in his Brisbane school, the fear and confusion of experiencing an earthquake, performing for Asian vs. American audiences, and even shares travel tips for Shanghai, Osaka, Brisbane, and more!
I had the pleasure of performing alongside Katei for five weeks in Alaska this summer. If you ever get a chance to check out his show, you won’t be disappointed!
Thanks, Katei!
