Maui has been through a lot lately.
The popular Hawaiian Island, made famous from honeymoon photo albums everywhere, took a massive hit in August of 2023 when wildfires ripped through the popular seaside town of Lahaina, leaving little more than rubble behind.
In the wake of the fires, many travelers postponed or canceled their visits to Maui. While this was a temporary necessity in the heavily damaged Lahaina region, much of the island remained open for business. And business suffered.
But savvy travelers like Peggy Cleveland saw visiting Maui in 2024 as not only a chance to add some dollars to a community in need, but to score some discounted rates as well.
The Tacoma-based travel writer and her husband visited Maui in early December to reconnect with the tropical paradise, chill at a five-star resort, and check in on how the island is faring since the fires. Turns, out, the island is as accommodating as ever.
