Some people seek travel writing as a career, others have it thrust upon them.
Matt Meltzer left his native Pacific Northwest for the University of Miami and the Marine Corps reserves and never looked back, making South Florida his home to this day.
While holding down a “civilian” job in the mid-Aughts, Matt began writing a daily personal blog about his life and surroundings.
The blog attracted an audience, as well as the attention of the editors of Thrillist and other websites. They offered him a chance to write about food and travel, and a new career was launched.
After going back to school for a Masters in journalism, Matt jumped into his new profession with both feet. You can find him on the road or in the air for sometimes half the year, either in the US or abroad.
Matt’s assignments have taken him everywhere from remote Africa and South America, to Buffalo, NY and Tupelo, MS. And you can bet there will be a large plate of the local cuisine in front of him.
