February 13, 2020 Darby Butts A Year at the South Pole
Listen Now

Now this is a new one.

After over eight years and 250 Travel Tales episodes, I’ve interviewed exactly two people who have set foot on the South Pole. The first one, Lee Abbamonte, spent only a day. And then there was Darby Butts.

Darby, an Annapolis, MD native whom I first met as part of my Mt. Kilimanjaro climbing group back in 2014, is a restless soul to say the least.

After climbing Kilimanjaro,  Darby returned home but grew restless again, and soon found himself in Ecuador trekking through the Amazon for two weeks.

It was there that he hatched a plan-  he wanted to visit all seven continents.

After a rigorous application process, Darby got a one-year job working at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Research Station.

A chef by trade with a long history in the restaurant business, Darby was made the food services supervisor and executive chef for both the summer and winter seasons at the station.

Darby became one of the rare people on Earth who can say they spent a winter at the South Pole, braving 24-hour darkness and temperatures reaching triple digits below-zero.

After completing his amazing experience, Darby spent time traveling through Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Soon another job offer came:  help open a brewpub, 20 Mission Cerveza, in Medellin, Colombia.

Darby took to Medellin immediately, became a partner in the business, and has lived in Colombia for the last 3-1/2 years.

I caught up with Darby on my recent visit to Medellin, where he shared great tips and Tales over a couple of tasty 20 Mission Cervezas!

This is an episode you don’t want to miss. Thanks, Darby!
